Lowell Youth Field Hockey Launches This Fall
As members of the first generation of field hockey at Lowell High School in the late 1990’s / early 2000’s, starting a youth field hockey program in Lowell has been a long-term goal and labor of love for all of us. Back then, we showed up to pre-season as LHS freshmen knowing absolutely nothing about the sport, but quickly fell in love with everything about it.
Flash forward 25 years…
Raising our own daughters in Lowell, we quickly identified a huge need for a youth program; both as an alternative fall sport option for young girls in the city as well as providing a feeder program to the high school.
While LHS field hockey still has a strong program despite most athletes not picking up a stick until freshman year, the possibilities are endless if we get young athletes started earlier.
It’s been over 25 years since field hockey was first offered as a sport at Lowell High School, and while much has changed (no more wool skirts!), we still don’t have an opportunity for kids to get started before high school. After many conversations between ourselves and with other parents looking for a fall sport for their daughters, we decided it was time to take on the challenge and start a youth organization from the ground up.
Field hockey as a youth sport is experiencing huge growth locally. In 2023, the Baystate Youth Field Hockey league was established with 18 member programs and 84 teams from 1st through 8th grade. In two short years, they have grown to 25 member programs and 157 teams! The interest and opportunity is there, and Lowell needs to be part of the movement.
While we didn’t quite have the structure or finances ready to join the league for the Fall 2025 season, we knew we wanted to get started right away. That’s why we are offering a Lowell Youth Field Hockey clinic in Fall 2025 to get the momentum started!
The clinic offers six sessions offered weekly on Sundays, a LYFH t-shirt for all participants, a youth night at an LHS field hockey game, and a fun celebration on the last day of the clinic. We will provide sticks and shin guards to lend any participants that need them – athletes only need to bring sneakers, goggles and a mouthguard.
Behind the scenes, we are working hard to build not just interest in our organization but also to raise the funds necessary to join the Baystate league in Fall 2026. If you’re a local business that is interested in supporting our efforts, please reach out. We would love to start building relationships that will support our athletes and get us to our goal of a fully operational youth program.
We’re incredibly excited to start this journey, and we hope you’ll join us this fall!
